Something that I get asked a lot is where I find my inspiration. My answer is: everywhere.
Breaking into a "creative" industry is tough enough, and even more so is coming up with content that sets you apart from everyone else. Not to say that I'm an expert on the topic of searching for inspo, but I thought I'd share some of the things I like to do when I need a creative boost:
1. Read a book (not a magazine or online article). Sounds simple enough to do, maybe even boring, but I really do believe there is a ton of merit in picking up a story to read. Think of it as a little world someone created for you to enjoy. I treat reading as a little escape from normal life - very effective for when you want to separate yourself from yourself (which is sometimes what you need to gain a little perspective).
2. Watch a movie at the theatre. I feel like this is really similar to reading a book, but that the experience is only as effective when done in the theatre. In the age of YouTube, Netflix and Hulu, I think movies are kind of used as background noise or a distraction sometimes. Watching in the theatre, you can experience a movie for what it is, the way it was meant to be enjoyed.
3. Go for a run. For those of you that hate cardio, just hear me out! I used to hate running, I really did. But other than being tremendously good for you physically, it can be great for you to just spend some time to think by yourself. Running doesn't require a lot of thought, so it gives you time to focus on yourself.
4. Listen to some music. And I'm not talking about in the car or while you study. Listen to some music - and that's it. Whenever I feel like I'm in a rut, I put on some music, lie back and listen. Focusing on the lyrics, the melody, and instrumentals always puts me in a creative mood.
5. Think about the people you love. Whether it's family, friends, or your soulmate, when you think about it - love is a pretty amazing thing. People write songs about it for a reason. Let that inspire you. If you can't get inspired on your own, let the people you love help you.
6. Meet someone new. It's great to have a support system that you can count on, but sometimes meeting new people can open you up to new ideas and thoughts that neither you nor anyone you know had never come to before.
7. Go on a date... by yourself. Being surrounded by others too much sometimes makes me feel like I'm a part of a unit, and while that's not a bad thing - it can be difficult to find the inspiration I need (especially if the people I'm with don't have the same mindset I do). Spending time alone doesn't have to be a bad thing, but sometimes being too influenced by others isn't always a good thing.
8. Screw the routine. Change it up and do something different every now and then. A little spontaneity goes a long way when you need a little insp.
9. Travel. If this isn't something you already do, maybe you should! Going someplace you've never been and seeing how people live and go about their days in an entirely different manner than you do can open your eyes in ways you've never thought of.
10. Start over. Whenever I'm really frustrated and feel like I'm not getting anywhere, I take a step back, breathe in deep breath, and start all over. If something isn't working and you've exhausted all other options, sometimes all you need is a clean slate.
